Great weather added to Comstock Easter fun

(March 26, 2008) – Warm temperatures and blue skies led to record numbers of children in Virginia City gathering eggs and turning them in for prizes on Saturday and Sunday, March 22 and 23, 2008.

On Saturday, the Chamber of Commerce sponsored its Great Virginia City Easter Egg Hunt in Miner’s Park and Mad Hatter’s Easter Parade on C Street.

On Sunday, the local schoolchildren had their Easter Egg hunt, though they were welcome to participate in both hunts, and many did.

For the parade, about 30 people paraded down C Street Saturday with their bonnets. There were $50 cash prizes for the Biggest, Best and Most Bodacious bonnets.

The prize for the Biggest hat went to Corie Schweinfurt with her “Bees in a Bonnet” hat

The Best hat prize went to Anita Calderoni with a hat made by hand in 1903. She also had on a dress made in the 1800s.

The Most Bodacious prize went to Red Kittel and the Bunny Power group, who carried signs saying “Bunny Power” and “Ban Coyotes.”

There were too many prizes to count at the two Easter Egg hunts that went on this weekend.

On Saturday, the Great Virginia City Easter Egg Hunt for visitors and locals was held, with 1,000 eggs donated by Model Dairy and others purchased by the Chamber. There were also another 1,000 plastic eggs with candy and store names inside. Kids who found the Easter Eggs with store names went back to the stores to retrieve a prize. The Sheriff’s Department also donated eggs filled with candy.

The eggs were colored and hidden by the Rainbow Girls and organizer Linda Del Carlo.

More than 150 children were at Miner’s park Saturday to find the many eggs, and were greeted by two Easter bunnies.

On Sunday, the local schoolchildren had their Easter Egg hunt and enjoyed the same great weather.

Kim Hames said it looked like more than 100 children participated in the hunt. Each parent boiled and colored a dozen eggs. Model Dairy also donated eggs to the children and the Sheriff’s Department and Fire Department.

After the egg hunt, the kids had fun playing in the playground and petting a pet rabbit a resident brought along, as well as posing for pictures with the two Easter bunnies.
