Silver City and Old Town Dayton
Silver City to get new schoolhouse
The citizens of Silver City got a belated valentine from the Lyon County Commissioners when they voted unanimously to approve a bid to rebuild the schoolhouse community center.
The approved bid to rebuild the building was submitted by Building Solutions LLC of Reno. They had the low bid of $763,078. The bid was based on the original Cathexes Inc. plans that had been approved by the State Comstock Historic District.
Tamara Burnet who was at the commissioners meeting on Thursday, Feb. 15, said she was in tears when they voted to approve. "The clock starts ticking on Feb 26 and they have 265 days to complete it," she said.
The town's kids and the Silver City Library will have a new home that will be modern on the inside but be historic on the outside and the firemen will get the full use of their fire station back.
County engineer Dick Faber slated Feb. 26 as the date work will commence, after a Feb. 20 pre-construction meeting.
As of Feb. 16, the historic schoolhouse has been missing for 2 years, 7 months and 9 days.
On July 7, 2004 the building burned in a fire sparked by county employees, who were using welding torches to install air conditioning.
Other bids were $832,700 by Bison Construction, followed by Devcon Construction at $872,000 and Reyman Brothers Construction, whose bid was $934,929.

Silver City Fire Department seeks recruits
The Silver City Fire Department, which has battled fires large and small over the years, from the Schoolhouse Fire in 2004 to the more recent fire at the Chollar Mine in Virginia City, is seeking new recruits.
The matter was brought up at the March meeting of the Silver City Town Board.
"The community has to be willing to support the department," a resident said at the meeting. "There are only four pillars of the department and they are getting burned out."
The Silver City Fire Department is known for having several generations of families volunteer, including the Rosses, the Allanders and more.
The board agreed to hold a dinner to promote volunteer recruitment sometime in April.
Needed by the department is a volunteer who possesses a Class B Commercial driver's license and someone to organize a cadet program.
"We get a lot of calls because we're a really good department, with good equipment," a firefighter said.
In addition to fighting fires in its own town, the Silver City Fire Department helps out other areas, regularly assisting Virginia City, Mound House and Dayton.
Recently they have responded to a fire at the Chollar Mansion and the Chollar Mine in Virginia City as well as a chemical fire in Dayton.

Trailers at St. Ann's rejected
St. Ann's Catholic Church in Old Town Dayton, the temporary home of the New Life Foursquare Church will not be getting any modular units, as the Comstock Historic District Commission has rejected the churches request to put two trailer-type units on the property.
The modular units were to be used as offices and school rooms.
The church is located on Pike Street.
The Historical Society of Dayton Valley did not offer a recommendation.
"We don't want to start bringing in trailers," said Bob Milz, commission chairman.
Milz said that Lyon County's request to use trailers at the Dayton Justice Court was also denied a few years back.
"You'd like to work with them, but if you open this can of worms, everyone will want to have trailers," Milz said.
New Life Foursquare Church holds its Sunday services at 9:30 a.m. at the Dayton Community Center next door to St. Ann's, and youth group meetings at the church on Wednesdays.

Artist Robert Caples' former home deemed historic
The home at 175 Silver St. in Dayton where artist Robert Caples and his wife, Rosemary, lived from 1956-58, has been listed on the Nevada Register of Historic Places. It was called “Lizard Hall” because of the desert environment around it and, presumably, its abundance of lizards and other desert creatures.
Caples moved to Nevada as a teenager in 1924 and stayed until 1959. He was born in Southern California. State Historic Preservation Officer Ron James said the home is significant for its contributions to Nevada history in the area of art and because Caples achieved artistic prominence while residing in the home. James called Caples one of Nevada’s premier artists during the late ’50s.
“Listing the Caples House is a rare opportunity to highlight a Nevada artist in the Nevada State Historic Register,” James said.
The white cottage at the corner of Silver Street and River Road, and the wooden shed in the back where Caples had his studio, are located inside the federal Comstock National Register District but just outside the state Comstock Historic District. The Comstock Historic District redrew its boundaries in October 2005 to leave out the western side of Silver Street because of conflicting documentation on where the district boundaries were, and because of additions to area homes that lessened their historic value.
Caples’ more famous works include paintings of Nevada landscapes and charcoal portraits of this region’s American Indians. In the 1930s, he worked for the Federal Arts Project, producing some of his finest portraits of American Indians. His mural, “Creation,” which depicts Nevada’ s American Indians, is inside the entrance to the Washoe County Courthouse in Reno.
Russell Lindsey, a student intern at the Nevada Art Museum, submitted the nomination of the Dayton residence to the Historic Preservation Office. According to Terri McBride of the State Historic District Office, Caples’ relatives donated boxes of manuscripts and other items belonging to the artist, and Lindsey used those items in his submission.

Historical Society gets tips on handling items
Sue Ann Monteleone, Nevada State Museum registrar of collections, gave the Historical Society of Dayton Valley some pointers on how to handle gifts or loans of items of historical interest.
Monteleone spoke at the regular meeting of the society at the Dayton Community Center on Pike Street on Wednesday, Feb. 21.
As the Dayton Museum's collection grows, members of the society were looking for more information on how to handle doantions.
Monteleone explained that the duties of the registrar involve the accepting of donations whether they are permanent or on loan. There are legal contracts that have to be signed and she recommended that whatever paperwork the society used be reviewed by an attorney.
She said the tracking of items, whether they are photographs, silk dresses, maps or diaries or whatever, is important.
It is also important, she said, to note who donated or loaned the item, a description of it and have that information recorded in a database.
She also suggested assigning a tracking number so that if an item is on display, loaned out or in storage it can be more easily located.
When an item or a collection is given to an institution a formal deed is needed, Monteleone said. This transfers the legal ownership of the property to the institution. If relatives then dispute that ownership the museum has the deed to prove it was given.
The Historic Society of Dayton Valley already has some of these safeguards in place, however the special knowledge of the speaker was well received with a round of applause.

Dayton C&C station sale is finalized
Lyon County has purchased the Dayton Depot and will eventrally turn it over to the Historical Society of Dayton Valley to use as a museum and visitor's center
The Lyon County Commission approved the purchase of the original Carson and Colorado Depot at the corner of Highway 50 and Main Street from developer Jim Bawden for $550,000. He bought it in 2003 to preserve the historic building.
Bawden bought the building from William Boyd Mitchell, trustee of the Mitchell family estate, for $450,000. Mitchell had inherited it from Helen Barton when she died in the mid-1990s. Barton purchased it in 1955.
Lyon County Commissioner Bob Milz said the county will pay for the property and be reimbursed by a grant from NDOT.
The Historical Society will seek a grant to pay for restoration of the structure to as close to its original condition as possible.
The depot building, which reportedly is more than 140 years old, had been moved to its current 1.1-acre site (5585 Highway 50 E.) several years ago from a location across the highway. It had been used as a residence until becoming vacant in recent years.
The station was a stop on the Carson & Colorado Railroad, where a narrow-gauge track ran from Mound House through Dayton to Keeler, Calif. It is one of two remaining C&C Railroad stations.
